Expression As the Way of Living

"The opposite of depression is expression because what comes out of our body doesn't make us ill, what stays in there does"- Dr. Edith Eger.

However, living a life full of expression in verbal/non-verbal, mundane/artistic ways can only occur when you exist among people whom you feel safe with.

They have earned through their actions the privilege to know you on a deeper level, and you provide them with the same level of safety to exist authentically. You use compassionate feedback instead of criticism as a tool to help each other grow.

Express by communicating to gain insight and build connection

Expression and vulnerability goes hand-in-hand. But, why even be vulnerable? One of the reasons is to take up the space that you deserve as equally as anybody else. One has to risk making a fool out of themselves to voice a concern, express dissatisfaction, and form an opinion that may upset or trigger someone. If, however, such feelings and thoughts are not put forward, one can slowly find themselves in a situation where they aren’t taken into consideration, respected or valued. This can create a great deal of internal pain, and can cause them to be passive-aggressive, depressed or have feelings of unworthiness, self-hatred and hatred towards others.
Another reason is the possibility of deeper connection when your expression is taken with positive-regard and that you have given this person the chance to know you more. This allows space for them too to express their own needs, thoughts and feelings. It becomes back and forth, the expression with compassion and taking it in with compassion.

Creative expression and challenges with it

Sometimes, recognizing and verbalizing our feelings can be challenging. Many people discover it easier to express themselves through creative outlets such as personal style, artistic endeavors, or their work. These forms of expression often reflect our values and become integrated into our lives, even when verbal expression feels difficult. However, this type of expression can also bring feelings of vulnerability, as it opens us up to potential judgment or rejection. Embracing our courage can help us navigate these fears and feelings of unworthiness, allowing us to express ourselves authentically and without shame.

Express yourself and decide who you feel safe with

Embracing vulnerability is coming in terms with the fact that your choice to show up authentically and express yourself may be met with harsh criticism, undesirable reaction and may not be as rewarding as you would have imagined. You can simply avoid that by being clear what your expectations are when you share with them your vulnerable thoughts, ideas or creations. If your expression is hurtful to the other person, you must have the strength and compassion to understand why their reaction is the way it is. The third scenario, where the other person has no reason being hurtful to you in your expression of yourself, you can either choose to communicate your boundary that you don’t want to be in their presence if they are going to be like this, or you can just choose to limit or cut off your interaction with that person.

Expression encompasses a huge aspect of what makes us human because it is the basis of human connection. Not being able to do it in a healthy way, of being scared of negative outcomes based on past experiences leaves us feeling dissatisfied and isolated.

  • To address these issues, it’s essential to educate ourselves about their underlying mechanisms and explore healthier strategies.
  •  This may involve learning skills like setting boundaries, asserting one’s needs, and prioritizing self-care to foster authentic connections and overall wellbeing.
